4-H Sheep Exhibitors, 2009 Grange Fair

Photograph info: This photograph was taken last week at the Middletown Grange Fair in Wrightstown, Pennsylvania, our annual county fair, a 5-day event with great food and entertainment, rides for the kids, and those wonderful blue-ribbon contests in every category from antique tractors to apple pies, Beefsteak tomatoes to Dinner Plate Dahlias and cows to quilts!

I spent four days at the fair photographing various 4-H events for the Penn State Cooperative Extension (where I also work as a Master Gardener) and will share a couple dozen of the images over the next few posts.

Enjoy the rest of the summer!

Camera settings and post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II and the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens at 100mm, ISO 400, f/3.2, shutter 1/2500s. Curves adjustments.

Thank you for visiting Durham Township!

Striped shirt, striped tent, people looking around,
Fruits of lots of hard work at the Grange Fair abound.
A fresh trimming and primping is the best way
To keep your sheep from having a ba-a-a-ad hair day.

Welll i guess somebody has to do it but I could never shave a sheep.

T'is the Season of Fairs across our land.
Scenes as this oft' appeared
May not a nation someday awake,
and realize whom else has been sheared?

Apologies to the Bard,
I'm embarrassed to hype it.
Fore King Lear it is not,
but a monkey, at least, could type it!

I love the journey you take me.

A wonderful image. Charlotte's Web at the fair.

Such a great shot.

I was at the Hunterdon County 4H fair for a couple of hours today and saw a sheep getting sheared. She did not seem too happy about it, but with the heat I am sure she appreciated it when it was all over.

I like the strength of colours on this, and the sheep in the background looks like a camel

County fairs are so much fun - we just had ours in Salem County NJ and I had so much fun taking pictures there - I am anxious to see all of yours - this one is fantastic with the DoF and long view down the tent....

Tender toned.

I love how you've captured the thoroughness of the sheep's preparation before the competition. The John Deere hat nicely tops off the picture.

Very practical shot. I'm looking forward to seeing the others from the fair. I'm going to our fair in the morning.

Very beautiful shot..

There's nothing more American than a good county fair and you captured it with this shot. Children who learn to love and care for animals, learn how to love and care for others but that's my opinion.

I liked how the sheep is the center of the attention and not the person shearing. The sheep area is very in focus and the color seems more intense than the rest of the photo. I didn't know what was meant by curves adjustment.

I like how the symmetrical tent frames the rest of the scene, but I think there are to much stripes.

David, I have been reading your comments over and over and laughing for at least the last half hour! You and JPH should be on stage as entertainers.
