Ground Level Stable Barn
Photograph info: This photograph was taken in New Jersey on July 4th - it was the red, white & blue combination and the "face" that caught my eye as I drove by that day. If you live in or near New Jersey as I do, you may concur that it's easy to get lost there. With its perplexing lack of street signs and building numbers, its dual place names, and its places with no name at all, even my GPS gets confused. Driving in New Jersey can be a frustrating experience if you're there on business (i.e., trying to find the Canon Service Center in Jamesburg) or a lovely one if you're in no hurry. Despite its industrial park reputation, there's no shortage of stunning scenery in its beautiful forests, fields, rivers, beaches and farms. Case in point, this lovely post-1900 dairy barn - just wish I knew where I was when I took the photo! :) The large, rounded roof on this type of barn makes an ample hay loft. If you're fascinated by barn architecture like I am, you can read more about this barn style right here. Camera settings and post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II Thank you for visiting Durham Township! --Kathleen Comments
Love your capture, stunning clouds. I have never been to New Jersey but lived in Alberta, Canada for years. Thanks for taking me down memory lane, I do miss the space and barn. I'm currently living in Hong Kong, you can imagine the contract of space and land. Love your blog, keep us posted. Posted by Molly Mavis on July 23, 2009 12:45 AMBeautiful compostition for this shot. I like how you are showing so much of the sky... The colors of the building itself are stunning, too. Posted by Mirko Herzner on July 23, 2009 1:28 AMWhile New Jersey hosts some urban settings, there is so much more. A classic barn bu the sky really makes the image standout. A great country image. Posted by Dan Creighton on July 23, 2009 11:55 AMAwesome shot and great eye for the 'face' - you should submit this to the faces in places Flickr group! http://www.flickr.com/groups/facesinplaces/ Posted by Betsy Barron on July 23, 2009 1:40 PMWhen you took that picture, you were standing in front of a beautiful old barn, on a living green carpet, under windblown clouds. You were where you were supposed to be. Doing what you were meant to do. Your welcome. Posted by David Tinnon on July 23, 2009 5:24 PMGreat photo!! Perfect for the Red, White, and Blue theme. Thanks for the barn architecture link! I love photographing barn and it pains me when one is torn down. I have several "Pennsylvania Barns" near me and there's a hexagonal barn on County Line Rd at Walnut St in Colmar, PA. It blew down in a storm a few years ago and was rebuilt, so it lacks it's original charm, but it's still pretty cool. Posted by Wayne Woodruff on July 23, 2009 8:36 PMHello Kathleen. bonsoir, Beautiful photo and processing on this. I love the bright colors and your explanation of the red, white and blue theme. I also love barns and don't see many with curved roofs like this one. The bright green grass is beautiful too! Posted by cara on July 25, 2009 8:01 PMAwesome shot, very peaceful. Posted by seb on July 27, 2009 7:56 AMperfect color..nice shot Posted by editorial commercial photography singapore on July 28, 2009 3:01 AMThe colours are really beautiful, and I like the composition with low horizon line. Actually I find fascinating these barns, with the facade resembling a human face; here in Italy barns come in a totally different fashion. Posted by Enrico on July 28, 2009 3:48 AMThis barn is familiar to me...but I don't recall where. I regularly, purposefully, set out to get lost in NJ...always looking to stumble on something new. I find NJ pretty easy to navigate because it is traversed by so many highways that you cannot go very far before crossing one. This is a gorgeous photo of this gem of a barn. Posted by matt on August 4, 2009 1:50 PMKathleen, I visit your site often to view the gorgeous photos of your part of the world. I found you several years ago researching a trip to PA to photograph barns and mills. Wisconsin may be the dairy state, but the east coast takes better care of their history! Thanks for many "wish I was there" photos! Posted by Ruth on August 5, 2009 12:28 PMThese are great photos! Have you ever thought about selling images on istockphoto.com? Posted by Tom on August 7, 2009 12:17 PMI'd like to fly my kite there. Posted by rob on August 10, 2009 2:40 PMThis is such an iconic farm shot. Great sky, colors, of course. The amount of sky is unusual and really makes you pause and look the image over. Great work! Posted by Bob Towery on August 17, 2009 1:38 PMVery nice picture. Clouds, colors ... i like it !
