Severe Thunderstorm, Chester River

Photograph info: I took a short trip to the Chespeake Bay last weekend where I photographed this severe thunderstorm as it made its way across open waters on Friday night.

The Chester River is a major tributary of the Chesapeake Bay on the Delmarva Peninsula. It's a three-hour drive from Durham Township.

Camera settings and post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II and the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L lens at 24mm, ISO 250, f/10, 1/100s. The photo is slightly underexposed in camera. Basic S curves adjustment for contrast - no other post-processing. (The first person that asks if this is HDR is going to be flogged with a wet noodle.)

Thank you for visiting Durham Township!

Is it HDR??? (Hey c'mon...you knew that was going to happen!) :D

I get the same thing sometimes. The dynamic range on the new cameras is amazing!

Of course the drama and intensity here is completely amazing.

So, Kathleen, is it safe to mention FDR? HDTV? NBC? GM? Had to chuckle with this one. I spent late Saturday on the Snake River and drew the same meteorological card producing almost the same Heavily Darkened River effect that you and Laurie have mentioned.

I love getting my east coast weather report this way! So dramatic. So personal. So late. So be it. And thanks for sharing the dramatic HDR effect.

Great clouds and a pleasing scene. We've had a lot of these lately and having an expansive view to show them to glory is all import as you've shown here.

Really beautiful shot. Love the movement in the foreground and that wet field of dirt in the middle.

Once again the clouds are painted gray
As the storm across the river makes it's way.
The wind stiffly blows, the rain descends
The normal calm of this view the picture transcends.

Not the Mississippi, but all that Black Water....maybe a little Doobie Brothers? (I presume I've pre-dated you here, but it is a catchy tune!)

(Still lookin' for my "Chester River" music collection....maybe tapes in the basement...)

Now log off and go outside, please. (camera with, of course!)

I agree that the dynamic range is amazing Kathleen.
Beatiful tones, I especially like the sky.
