Jakey's Latest Bull Calf

Photograph info: This photograph was taken on Monday morning at Jakey's family farm. Jakey is raising a couple dozen bull calves and this is the newest member of the herd.

I feel a little guilty when posting shots like this because photographing baby animals is like photographing pretty girls - you can't take a bad shot, and it has absolutely nothing to do with your skill as a photographer, haha.

This calf is a really charming little guy - he let me scratch under his chin and behind his ears while I sat there. Usually they're only interested in finding food!

Camera settings and post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D Mark II and the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L lens at 24mm, ISO 1600, f/2.8, 1/160s. Taking a composed shot of a very young calf is like shooting fish in a barrel, so I opted for something slightly more challenging - I set an approximate exposure and focal length, then put the camera on the barn floor and let the little guy explore while pressing the shutter button. Curves adjustments for contrast.

Thank you for visiting Durham Township!

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww....So very sweet! Don't try to tell me this didn't take advantage of your skill...this is beyond just being a cute photo of a calf...this is artistry in action, definitely a testament to your skill with a camera.

Excellent picture. I love being able to see the lines in the fur around his right eye.

Nice deep of field thanks to 2.8 aperture. In my opinion the low foreground do not contribute much to the equilibry of composition.

Great photoblog!!

Jakey's Latest Bull? Sounds like a great AM talk show!

This is my favorite version of "Silver Threads and Golden Needles! (brows and the straw,{hay now?}) I haven't seen a lens aperture this big since 8x10 Calumet days. How many mega-pixels can a bull be?

....and dittos to the above accolades, Kathleen, you are the best bull shooter ever!

Never commented before. But I've been watching for a while enjoying your photographs.

I appreciate your photographs immensely. I also appreciate your comment about shooting fish in a barrel. Sometimes you know what is going to turn out well, and those are often boring to take. But beauty is still beauty. For me, it is easy to depreciate the value of something that comes naturally. Someday I hope to capture that beauty that you do so easily.
