Snow on a Wrought Iron Gate in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Photograph info: This photograph was taken last night during a light snowfall in the city of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, about 20 minutes from Durham Township. The gate is on Center Street behind the Moravian Academy and is an entry to the old Moravian cemetery.

The blue tone is from a white balance adjustment -- the (awful) city street lights threw the camera's auto-white balance out of whack so I adjusted it in post. If you want to know more about white balance (or light temperature), here's a nice little tutorial.

The "blurred" background is from shooting with the 85mm f/1.2 lens fully opened.

Camera settings and post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D and the Canon 85mm f/1.2L lens at f/1.2, 1/30s, ISO 1600. White balance adjustment and basic curves adjustment.

Thank you for visiting Durham Township!

Man's artistry in iron, crowned with nature's topping and now photographicly frozen in time.

If twisted iron interests you, check out www.gkrugandson.com - the oldest, continuously run iron working shop in the nation. Run by my friends just down the road in Baltimore.

Just so beautiful in its simplicity. And very mysterious.

This is a wonderful composition. The Bokeh is just sublime and I think the blue tones are very effective. Lovely shot!

I keep getting pulled in deeper to the railing and the back ground is perfect.

Oooh looky, Bucks County has French curves! As for balance, you got all kinds of balance as usual. Snow adds such a nice accent to everything it settles on--even makes iron look delicate. I still smile whenever I see it beginning to snow. Ought to be a nice moody poem for this image.......Jon......maybe something Poe-ish....or at least a Poe-ish joke?

The blue color cast adds to the tone to convey the coldness of the day. The accumulated snow on the ornament looks soft and delicate. Very nice, Kathleen.

David, you asked for it.....

Beyond this gate many monuments somberly stand
Marking the plots of those now moldering beneath the land.
The blackness of iron versus the whiteness of snow
Do their souls abide in heaven or the place far below?
Hear this season's true message, then decide your fate;
Consider God's gift before it's to late!

Poe-esque honors
to lens and pen.
Please get back to work,

Snowflakes are like people, they seem so alike but are so very different. They group together haphazardly at first, then gain strength and achieve great things.

The whisper of the snowflake is calm and soothing. The whisper of the people is cold and unsettling.

What really lies under that mantle of whiteness?
