A Field of Red Millet

PHOTOGRAPH INFO

This photo was taken Monday morning about 25 miles north of Durham Township in Northampton County, Pennsylvania.

I'm pretty sure the primary use for red millet is in birdseed mixtures -- but one of its secondary uses must be as an inspiration for artists! I was en route elsewhere but felt compelled to pull the car over into a field, get out and take this photo.

The blue flower on the bottom right is a roadside "weed" called Common Chicory (Cichorium intybus), often mistakenly called Cornflower. Chicory leaves can be eaten in salads and the plant has been used medicinally for centuries.

Camera settings and post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D and the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L lens at 24mm, ISO 200, f/14, 1/160s. Curves adjustments for contrast & saturation, color balancing.

Thank you for visiting Durham Township!

Very nice shot the curvature really sets it off. Very vivid and the millet appears ready to eat. Very good composition. Bravo on your work.

In a vast expanse of red seeds
Is a blue flower that some think is weeds.
It is standing so proud
In the midst of the crowd,
It's own beauty is all that it needs.

I would have stopped too!

What a striking image. Beautiful rust and greens and a patch of blue in the sky. A very calming sight.

Love the color, love the division into thirds, love the inclusion of the one purple flower to draw the eye. I like that you resisted the temptation to shoot this as a horizontal. This works.

What a prize! Nature's palette.
JPH sums it up so beautifully.

"Take a field of bird seed with a glass of water and call me in the morning." --Dr. Connally

The calming and restorative powers of this scene are remarkable, yet typical of your practice. You could be starting a religious movement or practicing medicine without a license. Either way works for me, I feel better already!

Thanks Doc.

The rust is so wonderful. It seems to glow in the sunlight. The gentle curve of the land is quite soothing and allows the eye to travel gently through the frame. The little hint of purple is a nice touch.

This is really a strong image.....the bold and colorful impact of the red millet, the converging lines of forest and field and then the blue chicory in the corner. Great work!

So many, looking and acting the same; a hurried preparation toward insignificance. But as always, a few hold overs and hold outs make a stand. They are determined to sell themselves dearly even as they go down like chafe in the wind.
