Bull Calf at Stoneybrook Farm

PHOTOGRAPH INFO

This little guy is one of nine new Holstein bull calves that Jakey is raising for beef. (Only female Holsteins become dairy cows.)

The calf got himself stuck between the side of the pen and a board that fell down, but he eventually overcame his dilemma. :)

Camera settings and post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D and the Canon 50mm f/1.2L lens at 50mm, ISO 800, shutter speed 1/125s, aperture f/1.2. Curves adjustments, color balancing.

Thank you for visiting Durham Township!

He was stunned to hear you say he was being raised for beef! He doesn't like this idea. "What's wrong with a salad?" he asks you, his eyes welling up.

His expression reminds me of when I worked on a dairy farm raising calves. He is scared and curious at the same time.

Great lighting effect !!!

On unsure legs he stands in the straw
Sun streaming in through cracks in the wall.
How cute is his face
But he'll need a miracle of grace
To save him from the fate to befall.

So with a twinge of sadness I write
Realizing the grimness of his future plight.
Because of his gender
He'll be raised to be tender
And I could next see him as dinner one night!

You are a real talent. This blog is an amazing idea. I grew up in PA and these photos are really capturing the subtle beauty that is in that region. Even the complexity of the people is coming through. These images are the essence of what good photos should be made of. Keep up the great shots.

Awww...Mooo! So very cute!

They don't come any cuter do they? Wonderful timing with the slightly cocked head and pleading soulful eyes, with the light touching him ever so gently on his sweet face.

I just wish I didn't know it was being raised for beef. It's just too cute to think of as steak! I may have to become a vegetarian now!

When we were young, we were so easily confused. Every new problem seemed terrifying. As we grow older, the same trials confront us. Do we carry our failures or our lessons learned with us? Do we have the ability to see the light that shines through all around us or will we remain trapped in the imaginary cages that we have created? If we could just learn to relax, to take our time, to stop listening to what other people think we should be doing and instead look inside ourselves, we would find the confidence to take that first step, that important step, that will set us free to be who and what we truly are.
