Welding Rebar in the New Milking Parlor

PHOTOGRAPH INFO

This is another photo from the new milking parlor that's being installed at the Thaler dairy farm, a couple of miles from my house. I've been documenting the building and installation process for the last six months.

This shot was taken in March. The milking equipment installer was welding rebar onto a post sleeve like the one in the front left of the photo. Jakey was standing in the doorway explaining what was going on.

Camera settings and post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D and the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4Llens at 17mm, ISO 800, shutter speed 1/200s, aperture f/10. Curves adjustments, color balancing, slight crop.

Thank you for visiting Durham Township!

i don't mean to seem nitpicky...but there is a definite shortage of Jakey photos lately.

please amend this at once!

Hood and gloves he wears as he welds
Piece to piece he continues to meld.
Creating a strong foundation, his trade does he ply
Cranking up the amps to make the sparks fly.

As always, fabulous composition and dof. I am in awe of your ability to get excellent light in trying circumstances.

love the colors the welding omits, great job.

Love the lighting in this - so natural and unobtrusive! Great reporter style photography that you seem to have mastered Kathleen.

So let me understand this "cow salon" thing; Jakey is standing at what will be the waiting area where the girls (cow-girls?) can have a moo-cha latte while perusing current periodicals featuring articles on the spring cow fashions, the latest cow-diets, the latest high-cow-lery deserts, and the hot scoop* on which pop-tart heifers have been running with the bulls.......all for about a quarter-mil less the Starbucks machine and the magazine subs? If only Mr. Larson could attend the opening, (but he's been to so many I suppose.)

*Given the context here, the term "hot scoop" carries an added load of meaning. (oops)

Happier cows make happier milk....(and enlightened photographers make...) Thank you.

The hats!? Where are the hats!?

Kathleen! This took my breath away!! Wow! I love so many things about this. The extended arms in opposite directions, one in background, one foreground. The reflected light on ceiling. The distant feel from both subjects- one is "masked" one is so far in background he is almost masked. The texture of the black "pebble" foreground, the interesting sources of light- torch, windows, reflected on ceiling, the strength of the lines in this shot as in the previous shot taken in this construction. The beautiful contrast of orange spark and white smoke. Very well done!!! :)))))

it looks like a bit of a tricky exposure and you handled like the master that you are. Wonderful composition.

Lets take a look at the inference of Jesse's comment for a moment. Of course every picture cannot feature "those hats." No reasonable person would suggest such a thing. However, perhaps you could expand your capitalistic consciousness a taste by inserting an "I want to order my own concrete finisher's hat now" order form link button to DT. It could tastefully be positioned just below the list of blog/org/etc. items........or above them.....whichever.......just trying to help.....

We own and operate an organic dairy and I must say, this new milking parlor is shaping up to be almost as enviable as your photographic talents. ;-)

This is a terrific shot, but I worry about your eyesight when I think of you peering through the viewfinder. Did you wear sunglasses as you set up the shot? It seems that watching a welder work is like staring at the sun. I must say that your image allows me to stare at something that I usually don't get to see, as I always turn away from the light when I see a welder at work. That aspect makes your photo quite fascinating.

gypsy: Working on it! :)

David Tinnon: I tried to talk Jakey's boss into using the milking parlor as an art gallery, too, but he didn't go for it. It's now filled with milking machines - and they're starting to "teach" the cows how to go in and out of the building. They're confused right now.

And here's your link for hats - and whatever else you want to wear in the Mennonite tradition! The hats are at the very bottom of the page:

Jesse: Hopefully there will be more hats...

Dez: I didn't wear sunglasses. I just tried not too look at the welding light too much.

I'm disappointed that you don't have pictures of the finished parlor. Now that they've been using it it's very mucked up but showing the final outcome would be nice. :-)
