Abandoned House Surrounded by Fields of Purple Deadnettle (Lamium purpureum)

PHOTOGRAPH INFO

This photo was taken in Maryland last week on my drive through some of the southern states.

Camera settings and post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D and the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L lens at 24mm, ISO 100, f/13, 1/200s. Curves adjustments, color balancing.

That patch of dry weeds makes a perfect centerpiece, but which is crawling faster--the paint or the plants? Not sure if the porch roof collapsed or thats the lid to the potato cellar?

Perhaps this is Kathleen's new dream studio with the darkroom IN the potato cellar, a lawn the size of Rhode Island, and a wraparound view of a perpetual cloud show.

The perfect road house for the journey, thank you!

Love the framing of this. And the colors. So glad the show has been extended, will be sure to stop in again, it is a treat to see your work in person.

The house is in need of a lot of repair
But still the corners look nicely square.
To restore all to plumb
Extreme Makeover should come
But sadly, The tenants have long since moved elsewhere.

Hi Kathleen,
Nice shot and very good colors. You really got a photographer's eye.

Such crisp colors and unexpectedly brightly colored doors on an abandoned building give this shot such an element of surprise. The purple deadnettle splashes of color add to the surreal feel. Very nice!

In the small version I see a 2D side-view of a man lifting something with a red horizontal lever.

In 2005 I shot that same farm house. What are the odds, being that we both reside in different parts of the country. Back then, the porch was still intact. I have to say, I like your image much more than mine but you can view mine it below. Thanks for the inspiration.

I love these kind of scenes. So often overlooked as eyesores, but so full of beauty. And I can't help think about the lives forgotten.

Where have you been all my life? I found your site on Hogue Chronicle and when I entered, I realized I'd seen it before when you commented on one of my posts some time ago. I must have been in a hurry that day and didn't linger. Silly me.
Your sky is incredible. I think I've seen this house in my travels through the southern end of my state! Not really, though. I love how you've framed the subject matter and the near-surreal color of the sky.

Perfect. The trip must have been wonderful. I hope next time I am traveling that way I will have time to stop and look around for photo ops like this. You have found some real gems and made them into master works.

Great shot here. I really love seeing this kind of thing on your blog. Your blog got me started on mine. Please take a look if you have a moment. I recently got the 5D and simmilar set-up to you and was back home shooting in the county next door. Anyways just wanted to say how much I like this one, and how the orange is kind of sickly werid thing coming out of the windows that really made me stop and look at this photo. Thanks -
Rob
