Merrill Creek at 6:30 p.m. (with Waxing Gibbous Moon)

PHOTOGRAPH INFO

This photograph was taken last Sunday at Merrill Creek Reservoir in Washington, New Jersey, about 40 minutes from Durham Township. Merrill Creek is a 650-acre reservoir surrounded by 2300 acres of woods and fields. About 10% of that acreage is an "environmental preserve."

It's a great place to see wildlife, especially birds. This part of the reservoir has a large stand of dead trees (which seem to light up in the late day sun) where I saw two resting Bald Eagles.

"Waxing Gibbous" is a lunar phase. A moon that is "waxing" is moving closer to being full and the word "gibbous" means "swollen." When the moon is in this phase, it rises in the afternoon and usually goes unnoticed until around sunset. It sets just before sunrise.

Camera settings and post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D and the Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L at 20mm, ISO 400, 1/250s at f/14. Curves adjustments, color balancing, perspective correction.

Thank you for visiting Durham Township!

I really enjoy this shot. In particular, the asymmetrical treeline really grabs my eye. Great light, great composition. A waning gibbous would have been nice too ;)

Nice soft light on the trees. I also like the way the clouds appear to being sucked into the focal point of the picture.

The great outdoors.... No boats, no cars, no planes, no roads, no houses, no phone wires, no trash. I'd move there except I'd spoil it.
Not how I normally picture New Jersey.

I really like the clouds in this shot. Feel free to share this on my photography forum -- my members would love to see this and it would be some great exposure for your photography as well.

A perfect composition. The incremental value gradation in the right tree line is awesome as it curves into the distance, like scribe marks on a steel rule, "from tree to shining tree," like in that song. The left side is balance by the "polish family goes wading." (Larsonesque?)

It is as if Mrs. Gibbous waxed the moon, fluffed up and arranged the clouds a bit, then got down off her stool, polished the trees and smoothed the waters.

Thanks to Kathleen and Mrs. Gibbous for doing their jobs so wonderfully well.

I've been coming to this site for awhile now, and I just had to let you know how much I enjoy it every single day I stop by.

Your photographs are beautiful...you really know how to find the beauty in our sometimes seemingly ordinary world...something that everyone should do to live a truly happy life.

Thank you for sharing your amazing gift.

Why not update so many days? I can not wait so long time to see your new photos.

I can happily enjoy this image indefinitely, but I'm starting to feel like a dad who's daughter was supposed to be home by 10:00 and its past 10:25.

Trying to scare a few hundred people here.....
need money for film? If you don't post something by the weekend, I'm considering going to church.

Group praises we normally hear,
Now faint grumblings I think appear.
So give us our fix
Please post some new pics
And most will comment "three cheers!"

what is that white dot ?

Posted by foto on March 26, 2008 9:46 AM

Beautiful! I like the way the clouds "fit" like a piece of puzzle into the curve of the landscape also leading the eye deep into the composition.

Merrill Creek was built and owned a consortium of 7 power utilities that partnered to build Merrill Creek in order to restore water to the Delaware River that is lost through evaporation in the cooling of 14 power plants was first proposed.

There was huge public outcry against the project in the 1980's by local municipal, civic, and church groups. Some protests even became violent.

It is a wonderful beautiful place to me and I wonder if those who protested it before view it differently now.

The crop and placement of the horizon is perfect. I love the lines pulling you into the V and the lighting on the trees!

Very well done!
