Pond's Edge

PHOTOGRAPH INFO

This photo was taken late Monday afternoon. I think it might seem a bit abstract so I'll explain:

You're looking at the edge of a frozen pond. The ice is at least four inches thick. You can see leaves through the surface of the ice. The boy is lying on his side with his head turned toward the camera. His coat is a similar color to the leaves under the ice and his head is lying on the hood of the coat. The sun is setting off to the right and the warm light is illuminating the boy's light brown hair. The white dots are air bubbles in the ice.

Camera settings and post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D and the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 lens at f/5, 1/160s, ISO 400. Curves adjustments and color balancing.

Thank you for visiting Durham Township!

Wow - don't think I've ever seen ice both that thick AND that clear! It almost gives the illusion that the boy is floating.
Thanks for another amazing shot!

The ice is so clear. The light is wonderful so warm even though it must have been icy cccold! I love the little bit of a red nose!

The picture is wonderful. Add to that the contrast of the luminosity of the face that we've normally seen associated with mud puddles!

Lovely shot, Kathleen! You've captured a wonderful glowing light on his face, and the colors are both rich and soft. But why oh why is he lying on the ice? :)

You _are_ aware that you're some sort of genius, right?

Wow. This is stunning. His smile almost looks like he is holding his breath, just to wrap up the entire effect. Perfect picture.

Great lighting, seems professional.

Although to me, nothing is more professional than effectively using natural light.

One of my favorite of your portraits.

And I thought a mild euphoric state had caused Kathleen to post the image sideways. Not a Chance, it's one more ice cold bit of Water Works from the woman who has a Monopoly on cool bank shots featuring bystanders just hangin' by the ion pool, or out on a limb, or sprawled on the Boardwalk.

"Thank you for taking us once more to the edge, it's a nice place to ponder," (to quote Emerson from "Neath Frozen Pond!")

Stunning! I love the light on his face and how it stands out.

JPH: Becoming a regular Whitman, I see! I love it.

Judith Polakoff: Good question. I don't know what the phenomenon is called -- but when some kids see an ice-covered pond, they want to lie down on it and pretend they're penguins. :)

Grosse Pointer: Yes, some sort, hahahhaha.
