Freezing Rain on Wild Black Cherry (Prunus serotina) at Dawn

PHOTOGRAPH INFO

This photo was taken on Friday morning just after the sun came up.

We had an ice storm on Thursday that started as sleet (several inches of it - boy, was THAT fun to shovel off the steps and walks!) and ended as freezing rain. The coating of ice broke tree branches and downed power lines, caused traffic and school delays, but left the hills and valleys sparkling like a million diamonds on Friday morning.

Post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D and the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens at 200mm, ISO 400, f/4, shutter 1/1000s. Curves adjustments, color balancing.

Thank you for visiting Durham Township!

This is the most magical image...a sight for sore eyes for sure. Thank you Kathleen for transporting me to a place of simple (not so simple) wonderment.

Make that two votes for "magical." A beautiful Christmas-eee image....Like silver icicles on a golden tree.

While my personal favorites are the "big sky-clouds-sprawling land" shots, it's your eye for diamonds like this that I find the most impressive. (That your are shooting or perhaps "mining" them at dawn is impressive too!)

A merry thank you for a very merry vision!

This really is like so many diamonds and the light in the background is amazing.

We had a touch of that same weather. Mostly the freezing rain and about an inch or so of sleet.

I managed to get some shots of very similar subjects. I didn't manage to get such wonderful light as you did though, the sun was absent the entire time I was out shooting and by the time the sun came out the ice was all but completely melted of the branches.

I am horticulturally challenged though and I don't know the varieties of berries that I photographed. Maybe you could tell me what they are?

Silver! Gold! Diamonds!
In all the fairy tales you used to read when you
were a little girl.

This looks like a scene from Dr.Zhivago's movie.
It has all the colors of every room in the
Hermitage, gold, silver and crystal chandeliers.

Our insecurities created by life experiences can cause us to cover ourselves with layers of insulation, layers of protection, layers of deception. These initial layers are painfully transparent and must be temporary or they will build up through time, cloud reality and restrict our opportunity to develop. We can freeze the flower to protect the fruit but the fruit must be tasted. To be truly free, we must generate enough confidence, enough positive energy, to remove these layers. We must be honest with ourselves because through honesty there is strength and through strength there is enlightenment.

This is simply beautiful. I love how you've captured the light - gives everything a wonderful glow. Very well done Kathleen!
