A Morning Before Hunting Season
PHOTOGRAPH INFO As you may have guessed from the title, this was taken a few mornings before deer hunting season began on November 26th. That's when I stop walking through the fields for a few weeks, until the season is over in January. Flourescent orange outerwear is de rigueur even if you're walking along the roads around here. Google "hunting accidents" if you want to read up on that topic. Post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D Thank you for visiting Durham Township! --Kathleen Comments
Shot of Durham Church? I spent two solid days hunting behind Riegelsville and never fired a shot. The heard size has been greatly reduced in our area. Since hunting is not permitted along the canal in Riegelsville it might be a good time for a walk there. I've always enjoyed your shots of the river and canal. Posted by TJS on December 4, 2007 8:02 AMThis would make a great cover shot! Posted by Sherri Meyer on December 4, 2007 9:16 AMBeautifully composed. Perfectly inspirational. John Constable would be all over this.....maybe he is......and Turner......Thomas Cole.....Willow.... Dose my heart good, thank you. Posted by david tinnon on December 4, 2007 12:19 PMKathleen, How peaceful. I can almost hear the bell tolling and see the family plots in the cemetery behind the church (near the picnic tables). And as David so aptly said "Dose my heart good" Posted by JPH on December 4, 2007 4:49 PMCome to Washington state.I'll show you some mountains here. Posted by Chris Chisu on December 5, 2007 7:13 AMSomeone pointed this out to me today and it amused me. Whomever the artist is works fast! -- TJS: Yes, that's the Durham Union Church. I live very close to it and walk there often. Surprised to hear about the local deer herd. I saw 44 deer in one 1/2 mile stretch along Funks Mill Road last spring. Since we lost the towpath in the last three floods, I haven't ventured to the canal much. It used to be a sanctuary for me. Thanks for mentioning it - maybe I'll get adventurous when the snow starts falling later today. Adolph: I'll still be taking and posting pictures during hunting season. I just won't be in the fields much. A photoblogger never rests... :) JPH: No picnic tables at this church but plenty of historic gravesites, pre-Revolutionary war and everything thereafter. (They've got a million dollar view and they're six feet under - go figure!) Chris: Thanks for the invite. I lived in Seattle for four years so I know your mountains pretty well. Unfortunately, your weather keeps me well away from there. :) That's why I left. Posted by Kathleen on December 5, 2007 9:19 AMThe Sanctuary: A place of refuge and protection. A place where no matter who you are or what you believe, you are welcome. The ground is fertile, the sky is clear and the sun shines brightly. It may be a building, a field, an ocean, a room in your home. It may be your family, your friends, your children or your partner. It may be in your mind, your heart or your soul. But, no matter the location, fear not what people might say or do because you have arrived at your own place of peace. Posted by Willow on December 5, 2007 9:27 AMKathleen, if you do venture out later today the canal is passable from the Riegelsville Inn going north to Mueller's. I would love to see what you come back with. Posted by TJS on December 5, 2007 9:36 AMThis is a gorgeous scene!! Posted by Ian on December 6, 2007 4:31 AMBeautiful setting for a church. How I wish I had such beautiful open space so close. In NJ as far as I know hunting is not allowed on Sundays so maybe you can venture there and find some treasures. I know when I go to my Aunt's Farm, well park now, in November I only go on Sundays. I've read enough about hunting accidents to stay away during the season. I think all the deer have been chased to suburbia. I see so many all the time and I live in probably one of the most congested areas of the State. I have a 10 lane highway just a few blocks from me. I've had deer with huge racks run through my neighborhood. I see deer both dead (hit by cars) and alive daily. It is the oddest thing considering I never saw but one growing up as a child in the same neighborhood. Posted by Laurie on December 6, 2007 2:53 PMBeautiful, peaceful scene. I too limit my walks during hunting season. Even though I don't allow hunting on my property, there are enough hunters on the surrounding farms (and a few who sneak into mine) to make me very cautious and stick close to the house. Posted by Kim on December 8, 2007 6:27 AMIncredible lighting. What a peaceful scene. Posted by Alice on December 8, 2007 3:14 PMvery interesting, but I don't agree with you Bonjour Kathleen ! Il love that shot especially for the composition. I love large skies and that peaceful and golden country ! Stéphane from Lyon - France Posted by Stéphane on December 17, 2007 10:04 AMSpeak!
