Early Snow #6

PHOTOGRAPH INFO

This is the last of the "early snowfall" series from November 18th and 19th. We've lost almost all the leaves on the trees now, so the next snowfall -- due today! -- will seem much more seasonal.

This is another shot where I tried to 'stop' the snow, but I set the focal point far in the distance rather a few feet front of me. The whole image is soft due to the wide aperture but I was hoping to get a feeling for what was happening rather than a lot of distracting detail.

This photo was taken on Route 611 in Riegelsville, Pennsylvania, overlooking the Delaware River, about two miles from my house. The cliffs, the trees and the tiny house on bottom left are actually across the river in New Jersey.

Post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D and the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lens at 80mm, ISO 1600, f/2.8, shutter 1/1000s. Curves adjustments, color balancing.

Thank you for visiting Durham Township!

The snow gives this photo quite unique "coat" of finish. I'd say it looks more like a painting than a photograph.

For me, I like that the cottage was included. If the view looked like this, it's no wonder that Washington crossed the Deleware to get to the other side.

Kathleen:

I have loved your snow series! Each one is so different, showing the many aspects of an early snow. This is one of your gifts--capturing the variations of a single and common subject, and doing so beautifully.

Thank you for sharing and for showing us the many possibiities for finding beauty in our own neighborhoods.

Hi Kathleen,

I stumbled upon your Blog recently, when someone doing a search for old trucks landed on my Blog. Then I did a search for old trucks and landed on your Blog.

I love the project you are doing. I get a real feel for the area in which you live and are documenting.

In response to this photo - I agree that the little cabin really adds greatly to this photo. I also wanted to know if you use a program such as Noise Ninja or similar when working with such high ISO's?

Picture postcard perfection! This is just lovely, and it really does accomplish what you were going for.

ES#6 is a fine finish to a surprising series. I especially enjoy the painterly effect of the compressed depth and I am delighted to see so much creative results from one brief, well-timed snow....as if it was made to order....now Kathleen, you didn't?.......did you?.....Willow?

Looking forward to winter in your world!

Simply beautiful, Kathleen. I love the muted winter colors.... you are so fortunate to live around such beauty!

Beautiful shot. Almost looks like a painting.

We are such a diverse group and have so many different ideas and beliefs, yet in the end, when enshrouded in the nonjudgmental mist, we are all the same height, the same size, the same weight, the same color and the same age. We are all brothers and sisters. We are all equals. We are all one.

Sherri: Thanks for the question. The Canon 5D is simply excellent in terms of noise levels at high ISOs. The only time I see noise is in the shadows at ISO 3200 - and then, not always. I used no noise reduction for this image.

Looks like a Seurat painting. The snow mutes the colors and adds to the atmosphere. Beautiful.

Your area is so beautiful - and this place is no exception. The small house nestled in amongst all those colorful trees - simply perfect!
