Mr. Heinz and His Delicious Apples
PHOTOGRAPH INFO This was taken on Saturday afternoon on my way to get a few dinner ingredients. I bought a half bushel of Winesap apples (my favorite) from Mr. Heinz and made a pie. Mmmmm... Mr. Heinz grows the apples he sells. He also grows sells raspberries and tomatoes in season. They're the best! It's Veteran's Day in the U.S. today. Thank you, veterans, for all you've done and continue to do for us. Post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D Thank you for visiting Durham Township! --Kathleen Comments
No 57 Varieties for this guy. Is that apple blossum honey I see? There is little waste with an apple... eat them whole, use the seconds for sauce and (along with the worms) press what is left for cider. The gleanings of the fall fruit harvest caught in picture. Posted by JPH on November 11, 2007 6:15 AMThis the quintessential fall scene if ever there was one. Wonderful! Mmmm...hot spiced cider time! May I add my heartfelt gratitude to all those veterans who potentially put their lives at risk to defend the rest of us. Thank you. You are all heroes! Posted by Laurie on November 11, 2007 7:09 AMmmm, just seeing this photo makes me want a big hot glass of cider. Posted by Keith De-Lin on November 11, 2007 8:23 AMMr. Heinz looks more like he could have been head of the Von Trapp family and made music instead of apples! And yes, JPH, It looks like Mr. Heinz has a little honey on the side....which reminds me of Adam, who also had a little honey on the side.... Thank you Kathleen, for this colorful peak at Durham Township's autumn economic activity.....seems you could do a very impressive "Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Market" photo collection. Posted by David Tinnon on November 11, 2007 3:46 PMi love picking up apple pie from these farms! we drove 50 miles for one last month! Posted by crash on November 11, 2007 10:26 PMWhat I would five for some fresh fresh apples. University dining hall apples just don't quite have that freshness to them. This looks amazing, I'm sure they taste like nothing else around! This picture is very homey Posted by Michael George on November 12, 2007 1:23 AMWhy f/4.5 focused on the middle shelf? So much of the subject is soft, it just doesn't work for me. Posted by Severin on November 12, 2007 4:29 AMSeverin: Thanks for the input. I love talking shop. :) The focus is on Mr. Heinz's face; the top shelf is roughly on the same focal plane. If you look at the large version of the image, the very front row of apples is kind of soft but the sign and everything else around Mr. Heinz is pretty crisp. This was taken on a late, cloudy afternoon. I used f/4.5 to capture the area around Mr. Heinz's face and body while keeping the shutter as fast as possible. Mr. Heinz was moving and talking to other customers and a higher f/stop (smaller aperture) would've meant using a slower shutter -- and potentially blurring Mr. Heinz's face or body. Of course I could've bumped up the ISO but my preference, and what I try to get away with if it's possible, is to shoot at ISO 400 or lower. Posted by Kathleen on November 12, 2007 6:35 AMA crisp, colorful, country scene with good humor from D.T. Posted by MK on November 12, 2007 9:10 AM
Love the colours and lighting! Excellent image Posted by Craig Wilson on November 12, 2007 3:57 PMlove this shot and I just snapped w/ the 85 1.2L last week, a loaner from a friend, such a fine portrait lens IMHO Posted by btezra on November 16, 2007 3:03 PMFor David: How cruel is life!? I used to be the owner of a clothing manufacturing company that has been in my family for over 100 years. I had everything I could ever want; I lived in a mansion with 8 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms, a swimming pool, tennis court, cars and over 50 acres of woods and orchards. I had a plane, a big boat and a house in the Bahamas. All I had to do was keep making cheap clothes for the major retailers and I was home free! I brought in all kinds of illegals and put then up in my old barns. I was avoiding payroll taxes and labor laws and making a ton of money. But those greedy retailers made better deals by sending their business overseas. I lost my fabric warehouses, my equipment and all my employees! Now those cheezy little tee shirts and 6 for a $1.00 socks I made a fortune on are being made in some place in the deserts of the Middle East that sounds like Istoleitman! My plane, my cars, my boats, my homes are all gone! All I have left are some of my old gardeners clothes and these damn bushels of apples! I used to have an Escalade and an Airstream! Now all I have is an old Ford Rambler and a broken down hay wagon I got from one of the out buildings. I have been sleeping in this musty old car, stealing apples from my old orchard and trying to sell them for about a week so I can buy a few gallons of gas and get out of here. Could have already paid for it if it wasn't for Dick Cheney! A major developer bought up my land and is starting to stake it out. I understand from the locals that it will become a 1,000 unit PUD with a "village center" anchored by a Walmart Supercenter and a Frank's 20 plex movie theater. The County just made a fortune by increasing their tax base! Somebody is gonna get reelected and somebody is gonna owe some carbon credits! Well, gotta go! Have to keep dodging the County folks who are trying to track me down to make sure I have a vending license to sell these things. If I can avoid them for a few days longer and keep lowering the price, maybe someone will buy them before they become applesauce. Don't know how much longer I can convince people that this unique kind of apple is supposed to have a brown skin! Geez, All I want to do is go back to school and get my GED so I can spell "refrigerated" on the first try! Posted by Willow on November 19, 2007 9:14 PMSpeak!
