PHOTOGRAPH INFO

This photograph was taken last Sunday. I drove by this barn at the most gorgeous time of day -- "the golden hour" -- and knew I had to take this shot. I quickly parked the car, grabbed my camera and ran out into the field. I took only four shots because my CF card was full and my extra cards were in the car. I ran back to the car, reloaded the camera, and in those few moments the setting sun had gone behind a cloud and the barn was no longer illuminated.

FYI: Any remnant of a vintage advertisement painted on the side of a building is called a "ghost sign."

Post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D and the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L lens at 24mm, ISO 400, f/10, shutter 1/200s. Curves adjustments, color balancing, slight perspective correction on the barn due to the wide angle lens.

Very picturesque. The balance of blue and red hues is really something.

Not the more common "Mail Pouch" ghost sign. Many of the old advertisments have gone up in smoke as the barns are lost to fires or just crumble with age. The light from the fading day and the fall season reflects the mood.

Great shot. Morning light is so amazing - changes the world I think.

Thank God your card wasn't totally full before you saw the barn. I saw that light and a sky full of clouds near Allentown on Sunday and was wishing I could be out there capturing the light. Unfortunately, I was inside doing a shoot and didn't finish until the sun went down. Was this shot during the morning golden hour or the evening golden hour?

Not as cute as the pink house, but more room to work big......and a nicer lawn!.......So how did you get those clouds to mimic puffs of pipe smoke that appear to trail around to the back of the barn?

Congrats on the the cover art and inside spread of images in Penn Mag. I requested my free copy. Addionally, thanks for the info on 'ghost signs.' I did not know that.
I've run out of room on my compact flash card before at crucial photographic moments and have found myself panicking over which images to delete. Not a comfortable feeling...

What a beautiful capture! The light that time of day is fabulous - one of my favorite times to take the camera out and shoot. Congrats on getting your images published in Pennsylvania Magazine!

Barns always make such wonderful subjects and this one is no exception. Beautiful shot and great lighting.

The clouds roll onward and shadows cover the ground. Much time has passed here: the barn no longer full of hay, the farming equipment covered in vines and the painted on prosperity that was Kentucky Club Pipe Tobacco a dim memory replaced by a modern, metal, stamped sign advertising produce at a different location.

Our lives mirror this scene; our memories are special and sacred to us but may still fade over time. Remember to look back on occasion and embrace your past even as you continue the journey ahead.
