Toasting Marshmallows (Using Very Long Twigs!)
PHOTOGRAPH INFO This photograph was taken last night at a bonfire with some friends. It was a clear, cool night and it felt great sitting around the fire, enjoying the night sky and the conversation (and the burnt marshmallows). There are probably 20 things technically wrong with this photo (handheld at 1/15 second, blown-out fire, wide aperture making some things fuzzy, too dark, noise in the shadows, ET AL) but I decided to post it anyway because it was so much fun to take. :) Post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D Thank you for visiting Durham Township! --Kathleen

Dining out with a flare.....nothing beats good company and a little charred sugar.....sorry to see that 2x6 go, but you got'ta love them roastin' poles. Thanks for sharing the fun, that's an art too. Posted by David Tinnon on September 30, 2007 9:56 PMBravo--this is exceptional. I love the warn and cool colors, and those loopy sticks and scattered bits of flame produce an almost whimsical feel to this. Definitely on of my favorite shots from this site. Great job! This is a great photograph and gives you the "warm and fuzzies" when you look at it. It makes me wish that I had lit up that pile of accumulated brush and dead fall in my backyard instead of being lazy last night. It was a great night for a fire last night. Posted by Russ on September 30, 2007 11:34 PMThis is so fanciful. It looks like something out of a fantasy book. I guess it captures the magic of the campfire, as cheesy as that may sound. I'm always a sucker for a s'more or two. Posted by Michael George on October 1, 2007 1:23 AMLife is not perfect, yet worth living so a less than perfect photo is well worth viewing. If only my brownie camera would do this good. All the kid's eyes are focused on the job before them. Posted by JPH on October 1, 2007 6:14 AMThis shot had me laughing to start the day. Trying to imaging fishing the long stick back to blow out a burning marshmellow. Thanks for helping me start the week with a smile on my face Kathleen. Posted by Bob on October 1, 2007 7:24 AMnow those are some long marshmallow sticks. Hope they were as yummy as this shot. Posted by Keith De-Lin on October 1, 2007 7:36 AMIt's a great capture.. sometimes in life we don't have time to make all the 'proper' adjustments, but to simply live (and shoot!) in the moment. Nicely done! Posted by Betsy Barron on October 1, 2007 8:07 AMThe photo is great because of the feelings that it induces. I LOVE toasting marshmallows and this photo takes me there, feeling the cold air and the warm fire. And the sticks are just about the best and funniest sticks I have ever seen for the job. Great catch! Posted by andy stenz on October 1, 2007 10:07 AMIt's good to know that not all of your shots are technically perfect and yet still hold value. These are the shots where the best memories are kept. I have some similar ones from when we visited my son just before he deployed to Iraq. We had a camp fires nightly at the cabin while we spent a few days with him. That was the last time we saw him. I look at those and I get very sentimental, they are most precious to me and I love them even though technically speaking they are pretty bad. I've been looking at them more in recent days because I am counting down the time to when he will come home for R&R in early Nov. Those really are long twigs! It looks like you all had a blast. Posted by Laurie on October 1, 2007 10:29 AMKathleen , Kathleen , they are really looong. ;) Yummy! The taste of smoking, hot sugar! How I loved toasting marshmallows in the winter time; sitting on a log around the fire with your friends with heat on your face and a frozen behind! Your arm resting on your pant leg giving perfect balance and the payoff was a perfectly browned specimen to showoff and give away to someone special. But this must have been set up by the ultimate torturer! It almost seems unfair that they have to balance those marshmallows over the flames on those springy twigs. Could you have made the sticks any longer? What next? Perhaps they could stand in the next County on one leg with one hand behind their backs! A roaring flame, blinding light and sparks flying everywhere! How do you expect them to be perfectly toasted? I have a feeling there was a lot of flaming meteors in the air and a lot of ash consumed! Posted by Willow on October 3, 2007 10:47 PMAlways something special! Very intriguing. Posted by Evi on October 4, 2007 12:29 PMPale Face roast with forked stick. (outlawed in eleven western states) Posted by david tinnon on October 5, 2007 8:22 PMThat's some pretty extreme toasting! Nice shot. Posted by LwS on October 6, 2007 1:07 PMUpon re-reading Willow, (something I hardily recommend to all!,) I've concluded that the "pale face roasts with forked stick" is a creative fellow who has devised a means by which one may roast one's own treat while simultaneously producing a token of endearment for that "someone special." .....and if you have black spots appearing in your lawn in the fall, call your nearest Cooperative Extension office......
