$300 Reward
PHOTOGRAPH INFO I took this photograph on Sunday along the banks of the Delaware River. I don't usually see 'reward' signs around here so this caught my eye. I was about halfway through reading the sign and I thought - hmm, maybe I should photograph this and post it to my site to help the guy out. Then I got to the bit about John Waters --- and that sealed the deal. :) Obviously, this is a very serious matter, and I wish the boat owner the best of luck. I hope this blog post helps somehow. But ... I must admit to laughing at the thought of the REAL John Waters - only younger - waving at people while innertubing down the Delaware and then stealing a fishing boat. Then I admit to laughing at the idea of anyone around here knowing who John Waters is, or funnier yet, what John Waters looks like. Maybe I'm out of the loop, but is John Waters a bit more mainstream these days? Post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D Thank you for visiting Durham Township! --Kathleen Comments
Boat thieves!! Get a rope! Posted by clarence on June 26, 2007 8:17 AMDefinitely interesting. Ken Simpson went through a lot to get the perp. It looks like the sign has been there longer than a week though. Did you notice the name "Simpson"? John Waters played a role in a Simpson episode. Posted by Laurie on June 26, 2007 8:18 AMVery good sharpness, and although a somewhat common motif I feel there's something to this I can't really put my finger onto. Let's hope someone gets his boat back. Posted by Tor H. Eriksen on June 26, 2007 8:25 AMawesome photo. John Waters is in some serious trouble. Posted by Keith De-Lin on June 26, 2007 9:11 AMawesome photo. John Waters is in some serious trouble. Posted by Keith De-Lin on June 26, 2007 9:13 AMHope he gets his boat back. Three young men in "tubes"? Is this an Americanism? Posted by Simon C on June 26, 2007 10:21 AMJune 18 fell on a Sunday last year, so I am guessing this guy either never got his boat back or has decided to move on. He's probably out floating down the Delaware on a skiff right now with his 'mug shot' in hand... Boat theft should be legally the same as car jacking and horse thievery....hang them (after their speedy and fair trial, of course) ! Dont mess with a man's boat...its a VERY serious matter ! R. Posted by Ralph Yost on June 26, 2007 3:22 PMGreat shot. I'd read only part of the sign until I saw the photo at the bottom, then started laughing. Then I realized it really is a photo of John Waters. :-) I'm guessing the thief probably won't get very far before someone recognizes him.... Hope the guy gets his boat back. Posted by Alice on June 26, 2007 3:22 PMSimon C: "Tubes" refers to inner tubes - the insides of tires. People inflate them and use them to float along the river in the summertime. (I laughed when I read your comment - there's no question that some of the lingo in the sign is very regional.) Betsy: When Durham Township has the budget to hire a detective, I'll be filing an application in your name! :) Posted by Kathleen on June 26, 2007 3:22 PMBoat theft should be treated legally the same as car jacking and horse thievery....hang them (after their fair and speedy trial) ! Press is press.....John Waters is probably happy to be only "associated" with someone that made off with a boat than with the usual trouble he gets from reviews that don't appreciate his unique perspective and sense of humor. Hope the boat is returned with fish on ice. Posted by JPH on June 26, 2007 8:15 PMI second the rope idea. Darn boat thieves. Posted by Tom Brandt on June 27, 2007 12:40 AMIronic how the environmental protection poster didn't have any.....or perhaps EPA documents are intended to rapidly decay? As for the other piece of literature, my sources tell me that a similar sheet had been stapled to half the trees in North America. A crime for which two forklift drivers from New Orleans have been charged, convicted and sentenced. The pair, both ex-account execs from JWT, concocted a plan to launch a new agency by first capturing both the PR account for John Waters and the Owner's Guide to Water Safety '07 brochure for Johnson. The whole scheme collapsed when the people at Johnson backed away siting the fear that linkage with a name like "John Waters" left the hatch open to a tidal wave of potty jokes that could potentially wipe out the reputation of their highly regarded OGWS '07 project. The courts ordered both ex-execs to go around an remove every sign and staple. Fox News has recently reported that the guys have been diligent and almost all the signs are down. They should soon be getting to that one. Nice DOF too. Posted by david tinnon on June 27, 2007 3:34 PMpoor john waters. his face getting plastered up there on that tree... Posted by candice on June 27, 2007 4:02 PMFaintly reminiscent of a poster from the old west for horse thieves. Of course, back then, they were caught and immediately hung from the nearest Cottonwood Tree! Now, they would definitely receive counseling from a myriad of experts. It was obviously a misunderstanding! The name of the town is what? Raubsville or Robsville isn't it? Case closed! The owner of the boat would have to apologize for leaving the boat in plain view of the waterway, thereby enticing the wayward tubers to liberate it in an attempt to stave off hyporthermia. He would then be ordered to attend sensitivity classes so as not to compare anyones physical characteristics to those of John Waters in the future and serve 20 years in prison for "unauthorized attaching" to a tree. I'm sure that after the trauma of the court appearances is finally over, the thieves would be happy with the brand new 45' Scarab donated by the town, (which was ordered to change its name to Borrowsville), a nominal cash settlement and an interview with Dr. Phil. Posted by Willow on June 28, 2007 1:53 PMWillow, that "K" woman suspects that we collaborate...I can't imagine where she gets... Posted by on July 8, 2007 12:11 PMThis could be a scam advertisement for the next John Waters movie, titled Boat People. Once I saw a similar notice for a stolen doberman dog, but I wasn't sure who looked like John Waters, the thief or the dog. Just kidding. Posted by on July 10, 2007 3:38 PMJohn called me yesterday and we ended up going fishing in this little rusted out boat. He was very tanned and weather beaten from the trip down through central America and up here to LA. Although it was good to see him again, I couldn't help wondering why he kept looking over his sholder. Posted by ROB on August 1, 2007 4:37 PMSpeak!
