Tree Swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) at Sunset
PHOTOGRAPH INFO This photo was taken Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. Ms. Tree Swallow was dive-bombing me for five minutes as I tried to take this shot! Obviously I was too close to the nest. I managed a few close-ups as she flew within inches of my head, but due to the wide aperture she was out of focus. I was pretty happy with the focus and framing on this one, though. Post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D Thank you for visiting Durham Township! --Kathleen Comments
Perfect timing and great evening colours. Very well done! Posted by dee on June 12, 2007 5:45 AMI have been pestering a nest myself, trying to get a good shot but to no avail - the dive-bombing is too much for me! Great job sticking with her! I think the colors of the grass, fields and sunset really make this one. Terrific. I've watched swallows on a few occasions and they are such quick and agile birds making them difficult subjects. She looks like she really means business. I love the angle of flight which you caught her. Beautiful! Posted by Laurie on June 12, 2007 6:18 AMReally nice capture, the tones and that bird...great!! Posted by Jesus on June 12, 2007 7:06 AMVery, very good colours and great work in capturing the sparrow in this pose. I especially like the colours on the bird house and the stick. Posted by Tor H. Eriksen on June 12, 2007 8:13 AMWow, fantastic shot, wonderful timing. I love it. Posted by Keith De-Lin on June 12, 2007 8:28 AMwow now thats a shot. Posted by Phonse on June 12, 2007 8:36 AMwho said Posted by anonymous on June 12, 2007 9:56 AMFantastic, I must try for the same. Your Photos have given me a lot of ideas. Thank you K. Posted by Baldwin W Walker on June 12, 2007 11:47 AMrecently I realized what it takes to make such perfect timing. I was wathing some ducks in the pond, when suddenly one of them took off the water and flew like 2m from me. If I hade my camera on that time, it would be a great shot... well, if I had wheels, I would be a wagon :-) Posted by ttomasso on June 12, 2007 12:21 PMNice catch. I love swallows - it is something about the shape of the wings and tail feathers. Great light here as well. Posted by Rob on June 12, 2007 12:31 PMBeautiful, Kathleen. Great colors and composition. Posted by Otto K. on June 12, 2007 4:34 PMBeautiful shot: lighting, framing, composition, action freeze, etc. Really nice. Posted by badgervan on June 12, 2007 8:28 PMG R E A T !!! I've never been a situation where I've been dive bombed by a Momma bird, however, I would assume it's not very pleasant. Great job sticking through because this shot is just perfect. Posted by Michael George on June 13, 2007 1:50 AMLovely image! Posted by Abhijit on June 13, 2007 4:35 AMIt was a long day. Intensive field work, coping with the constant demands for domestic materials and the never ending food cycle. The kids are safely tucked in with their dad beside them. I caught the last flight home...there before dark..it was a good day. An awesome shot. So many excellent compositional elements like the way the home balances with the trees on the horizon. The poise of the swallow, silhouetted against the warmly lite cloud as one vertical wing pierces the cool blue. The anchor-weight of shadowed foreground rounds out a wonderful evening. Even the unique timing is so impressive. I recently went to a rocket club meet and tried to get a "lift off" shot. Digital camera--not even funny. I got a great picture of three guys looking up, a faint vertical smoke trail in center frame tells the whole story of digital timing....and makes this swallow image all the more remarkable. Does this woman have timing or what? Thanks, (over 6K, but who's counting?) Kathleen. Posted by david tinnon on June 13, 2007 4:55 AMNice lighting and perfect composition! Posted by Alice on June 13, 2007 9:57 AMAs usual, a really nice capture. Your work is so enjoyable...as a fellow photographer, I am consistently impressed by your awareness of light, and beautiful post processing techniques. Thanks for sharing so many beautiful images. Nice catch! I love the colors as well. Posted by Angry Buddha on June 13, 2007 3:43 PMYour work never ceases to amaze me. Posted by Sabine on June 13, 2007 3:51 PMWhat a great shot. Bird in flight are so difficult to shoot. Take a look at this http://www.tobiasphoto.com/index.php?where=102 - He almost killed me :-) But I stood up for the art. Posted by tobias on June 14, 2007 3:27 AMBeautiful lighting. Great timing too - those swallows swoop fast! Posted by Roberta on June 14, 2007 12:31 PMYou have cut down the wild fields where I chased my daily meals; you have taken away the forest where I used to sleep at night. You have baled the grasses and harvested the trees and left me this little house made from the remains. I am here as your exterminator, as your source of entertainment. I eat the bad bugs and you get to watch me fly in this big green zoo. Does it ease your conscience? Posted by Willow on June 15, 2007 12:20 AMSimple beauty. Posted by melody on June 15, 2007 10:41 AMSo, Willow, if a person were sitting on your couch in your living room and went to put their feet up on your coffee table, would the action be prohibited by a stack of LP's containing the complete works of Joan Baez? .........I was just thinking..... Posted by david tinnon on June 15, 2007 2:34 PMWhat can i say more? ok...! I''' say it once more! Beautyful capture ! I like this lighting and colors...
