Texas Nick
PHOTOGRAPH INFO Nick is a photographer and a junior in high school near Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas. He emailed awhile ago in response to my "Durham Township Wants You" ad, saying he'd be visiting the east coast with his grandparents in March. So Nick and his lovely grandparents paid a visit last week; we had a wonderful lunch and a lot of fun taking pictures on the Frenchtown Bridge, about 20 minutes from Durham Township. Before they arrived here, Nick's grandparents were highly skeptical of the whole situation. They didn't understand why "some photographer from the internet" would want to take a portrait of their grandson "for free". They'd heard some crazy stories about MySpace and figured the this whole portrait thing was just a little... weird! (And I can see why they'd be concerned, actually!) But hopefully they feel better about the situation now! It was great meeting and talking to them. Nick got a bonus and met Famous Josh and Jenn while he was here; they were both on spring break as well. By the way, to anyone else who responded to the "Durham Township Wants You Ad", but hasn't heard from me yet: Thanks for your patience! I want to schedule appointments with everyone when the weather warms up a bit so we can do some outdoor shots. I'll be in touch soon! Post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D First image: This is comprised of four separate shots, all at 24mm, ISO 400, shutter speed 1/1000s, aperture f/2.8. Each separate image had basic curves adjustments for contrast and saturation; color balancing for tone. I flipped two of the inages horizontally then 'stitched' them together. (I would like to have posted it in a larger size on the main page, but I can't figure out how to make my MT template work with something that wide. If any of you MT whizzes have some notions, lemme know! :) Be sure to look at the LARGE version - it's 1800 pixels wide.) Second image: 30mm, ISO 400, shutter speed 1/1000s, aperture f/2.8. Basic curves adjustment for contrast and saturation; color balancing for tone. Third image: 30mm, ISO 400, shutter speed 1/320s, aperture f/2.8. Basic curves adjustment for contrast and saturation; color balancing for tone. Fourth image: 24mm, ISO 400, shutter speed 1/640s, aperture f/2.8. Basic curves adjustment for contrast and saturation; color balancing for tone. Thank you for visiting Durham Township! --Kathleen Comments

The group shot at the end is a marvelous candid as well. Nicely done! Posted by mikelangelo on March 22, 2007 2:14 AMKathleen, this is the best series of portraits I think you've ever done. They are fun and full of energy and help to tell the story perfectly. It looks like you are off to a fantastic start with your "Durham Township Wants You" project!!! I can tell it's going to be fun! My daughter's a junior and my son, a freshman, and this is exactly the kind of thing they love to do. (I post some of their antics on my site). Wish we were coming your way so we could get in on the "Durham Township Wants You!" fun. I love your site. Posted by Lori on March 22, 2007 10:36 AM"Famous Josh, Texas Nick & Jenn" - sounds like it should be on a marquee somewhere... I'm digging the third shot. Great portraits all around! You did an excellent job of stiching together the four jumping images into one. Very eye-catching. Posted by Russ D. on March 23, 2007 1:13 PMGreat portraits, Kathleen. Thanks,Joyce Posted by joyce on March 23, 2007 8:53 PMI tried this thing last night! It didn't work! Kathleen, not only are you shots always remarkable, and just plain amazing. But to be in one, much less FOUR, is just too good. Jennifer, the motherly one, actually said we are planning a trip up to NYC for this summer! You can expect I may be stopping in to Durham. Perhaps you'll get to meet my regular appearances. I'm so sorry I didn't have the Texan accent you had hoped for! Christian and Philip are so excited to see the prints! AND I UPDATED MY WEBSITE WITH A GRAND 8 NEW PICTURES! Hahahahaha. I don't think I can say thanks enough. It really meant so much to meet the person who has the most influence on my work, and style. -TX Nick Posted by Texas Nick on March 24, 2007 12:39 AMThe 2nd image has a really exceptional quality to it. The composition, the just out of focus background and and the light and mood of the subject give it a look that really takes it beyond just being a photograph. Posted by Jim Lawson on March 24, 2007 12:41 AMVery nice photoessay Posted by Abhijit on March 24, 2007 1:57 AMgreat set. looks like you all had fun. Posted by gSaenz on March 24, 2007 11:37 AMNice jumping Texas Nick, nice hair Jenn, nice bridge work Kathleen. The results you get with portraits is sooooooooooo impressive! AND, this group of images makes it look so easy, so natural! I just hope the Famous Chef was "sans aerosol" cause thats a nice looking bridge! Posted by david tinnon on March 26, 2007 9:23 PM Excellent! Famous Josh. I showed that original pic to a friend named Josh, and he was convinced I photoshopped it. The name behind, I mean on, the billboard. I'm glad you are still doing the photo sessions. www.evan7.com Posted by EJ on April 6, 2007 2:36 PMSpeak!
