Smoke on Route 413, Through the Windshield

PHOTOGRAPH INFO

This is one of those weird shots that makes photography so much fun for me. I took this through my car windshield (or windscreen, if you prefer) going about 20 mph.

I noticed the crazy smoke from a distance and could see the traffic slowing ahead of me. As I got closer, I grabbed the camera off the passenger seat, put it on the dash and started firing away without looking through the viewfinder (eyes on the road, of course). Luckily I'd used the camera earlier that morning to shoot bright, snowy landscapes with a wide depth of field, so the camera settings were adequate for this sudden opportunity.

Less than technically ideal, but full of spontaneity. :)

Post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D and the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L lens at 35mm, ISO 100, shutter speed 1/160s, aperture f/18. Curves adjustments for contrast and saturation.

It's time once again for The Photobloggies, the annual awards that celebrate photoblogging around the world. Nominations are open until February 15th. Nominate your favourite photoblogs!

Just lovely.

What I really like on this photo is, that the sun doesn't "destroy" this image. Sometimes a large intensive light source is to much for the sensor. So it seems that you have the full histogramm.
Good work or good spontaneity ;-)

Wonderful shot!
Is it possible to post it also in 1280*800? It is so great, I'd like to set it as my wallpaper...

This is pretty amazing I have to say. Right place, right time, right person to get the shot. Impressive. (You're windshield must be a lot cleaner than mine!)

Hey Kath, HAPPY BIRTHDAY !!!!!
Beautiful shot as usual.

This is so great, Kathleen, and you must have been very happy to find that at least one of your shots caught the sun between those trees, the perfect moment for a scene like this. Beautiful!

Very impressive shot! Great lighting and contrast. Beautiful!

Awesome light as your habits!

Holy Smoke Kathleen, this is super! Great interplay between the silhouette of the house and the negative space of the sky. The trees and their shadows would have been enough, plus those rays!

When I see a capture like this it is a testament to the spontineaity and the creative eye you consistantly demonstrate. VERY FEW people would have caught this on the way down the street. Your discription of the "incounter" makes the cropping and overall results all the more amazing. As for scrambling for the camera and shooting "on the fly," you make me laugh 'cause I've been there plenty of times.

An exceptional THANK YOU for and exceptional shot!
Makes my day!

I guessed much about your situation here from the photo - for spontanious phoography this really is a good capture with a moody impression. Nice 1.

Nice shot! I love the light coming through the tree. Great job!

Kathleen, yet another brilliant shot. The lighting is superbe. I wish I could manage that kind of shot with my tripod never mind through the windshield.

Keep up the great work you are an inspiration.

Kathleen, your spontaneity ought to be bottled. What a great testament to your creative spirit. (Plus you have a nice clean windshield!) I always leave your site inspired. Thank you.

The lightbeams on this are simply amazing and magical. You have captured a beautiful moment here.

Posted by Eidetikos on February 12, 2007 10:50 PM

This is not fair. I feel like the other comment about the tripod - I probably couldn't have gotten this image with a lot of forethought and a tripod - but you drive down the road, see it and shoot it from the dash at 20mph. Enjoy your blog - check it almost every day.

I love how this image causes me to "see" the movement. I can almost see the smoke rising.

Wonderful.
