The Icy Delaware River, Sunset
PHOTOGRAPH INFO The extreme cold weather continues. Today's high (on my home thermometer) was 19 degrees Fahrenheit. It's unusual to see the banks of the mighty Delaware River frozen like this. We stopped tonight to take a look but the lovely post-sunset light didn't leave much room for detail. I think I'll head down again tomorrow in the morning sun. Post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D It's time once again for The Photobloggies, the annual awards that celebrate photoblogging around the world. Nominations are open until February 15th. Even though the light was almost gone, you still managed to capture the essence of the scene. the colors of the leftover light are beautiful on the ice. The scene itself is full of childhood curiosity. The punch of red in his hat is perfect! Posted by Laurie on February 8, 2007 5:54 AMGreat shot, the light is really amazing. Perhaps you should have delete the white square on the child's arm : my eyes cannot do anything else than looking at this zone and I think it harm the picture itself... Posted by Chris CB on February 8, 2007 6:20 AMThink is has been quite some time since the Delaware froze. Interesting photo, and Love the red hat :) Posted by Noreen on February 8, 2007 8:51 AMChris CB: Thanks for mentioning the white arm tag. I never thought about it. I can see how it would be a distraction for you. I guess it didn't occur to me because the white tag tells a part of the story. The tag is a ski pass, a ticket that's put on your coat when you take skiing lessons. Kids around here wear them like badges. So I see a little boy - a ski student - working to perfect his balance on an icy patch. But stretching the interpretation a bit further, I see student of nature learning to balance himself in the environment, perhaps at an age where that still comes naturally to him, judging by his posture among the elements in the image. Posted by Kathleen on February 8, 2007 9:09 AMVery cool, I'm always envious of your light and weather conditions. Put together with your skill they make for awesome photographs. Posted by Jeff Ambrose on February 8, 2007 1:53 PMThis one's like a soap bubble. better be careful! nice light on the ice ... Posted by Crash on February 8, 2007 8:57 PMVery nice moment; the lines and colors are terrific. And I'm glad you didn't delete the arm patch. That doesn't seem like something you'd do, and as you say, it's part of the photo's story. Posted by MarkDM on February 9, 2007 1:04 AMGood capture. Even with f/2.8 at the speed of 1/30s, the result is very crisp. :-) The weather here is very unusual too for this tie of the year. yesterday rained all day and today looks like Spring is here to stay with clear sky and warm weather. Posted by nferreira on February 9, 2007 4:58 AMWOW looks cold there!! Love the composition and the interesting lighting Kathleen. Posted by Craig on February 9, 2007 11:21 AMThat's a great photo. Reminds me of when I was a kid in Minnesota and would go out on the lake to look into that deep, frozen water that had a greenish hue. It was so spooky! Posted by Aaron on February 9, 2007 3:44 PMLove this. Posted by melody on February 13, 2007 2:51 AMBeautiful. I like the light and relatively shallow DOF. Posted by Jennifer on February 14, 2007 2:31 AMNever thought there could be ice on the Delaware River, which is fast flowing one.
