Lime Kiln

PHOTOGRAPH INFO

Lime kilns were built and used in the 1800s to burn limestone. After 60 hours of burning, the limestone was crushed to make lime.

Around here, lime was primarily used as a flux in iron and steel-making but also to make mortar, to correct the pH in farm fields and for lime-washing house walls to make them waterproof. I'm sure there were plenty of other uses, too. Feel free to chime in. :)

Jenn provides a sense of perspective (and a splendid contrast that hot-pink velvet riding jacket).

Post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D and the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L lens at 55mm, ISO 100, shutter speed 1/4s and aperture f/16. Tripod used. (Staggering detail at full-size; you can count every layer in the sedimentary rock!) Curves adjustment for contrast and saturation; slight color balancing for tone.

Thank you for visiting Durham Township!

Great subject...

The splashes of color are a great addition to the photo.

I'd love to see this place with snow (I know that's such a rare commodity this year). It's the kind of place that it seems would be great to shoot in all seasons year round.

Love the tones and shapes in the wall Kathleen, good work as always.

This is very possibly my absolute favorite photo. In fact, every single one of my favorite photos is yours. The color of the green cloak (blanket?jacket?) is so perfect with the moss on the ground. I can't believe you live in such a fantastic, beautiful place!

The colors are beautiful in this, and you're right, that magenta jacket really draws the eye. Nice composition, too.

Well, Kathleen, I think this fantastic scene of yours deserves a better story than the "lime kiln" business. How about Princess Jenn's betrothed was carried off to this dungon by a troll, and having found only his cape, she dares not leave but fears to enter?

It's not lieing--it's creativity. Just toss any pesky "lime kiln" emails that would only detract from the drama.

Nice jacket Princess Jenn, nice work Kathleen.

I like that you always provide the "history" of your photos. Creative location.
