Lime Kiln
PHOTOGRAPH INFO Lime kilns were built and used in the 1800s to burn limestone. After 60 hours of burning, the limestone was crushed to make lime. Around here, lime was primarily used as a flux in iron and steel-making but also to make mortar, to correct the pH in farm fields and for lime-washing house walls to make them waterproof. I'm sure there were plenty of other uses, too. Feel free to chime in. :) Jenn provides a sense of perspective (and a splendid contrast that hot-pink velvet riding jacket). Post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D Thank you for visiting Durham Township! --Kathleen

A sorta fairytale with Kathleen ;) The color of this shot is nice. but,i don`t think the small trees in front of the hole is well.it`ll better if wipe it off possiblly. thanks:) Posted by jeff on January 22, 2007 5:37 AMGreat subject... The splashes of color are a great addition to the photo. I'd love to see this place with snow (I know that's such a rare commodity this year). It's the kind of place that it seems would be great to shoot in all seasons year round. Posted by Laurie on January 22, 2007 6:57 AMLove the tones and shapes in the wall Kathleen, good work as always. Posted by Craig on January 22, 2007 1:06 PMThis is very possibly my absolute favorite photo. In fact, every single one of my favorite photos is yours. The color of the green cloak (blanket?jacket?) is so perfect with the moss on the ground. I can't believe you live in such a fantastic, beautiful place! Posted by Sabine on January 22, 2007 8:54 PMThe colors are beautiful in this, and you're right, that magenta jacket really draws the eye. Nice composition, too. Posted by MarkDM on January 23, 2007 1:05 AMWell, Kathleen, I think this fantastic scene of yours deserves a better story than the "lime kiln" business. How about Princess Jenn's betrothed was carried off to this dungon by a troll, and having found only his cape, she dares not leave but fears to enter? It's not lieing--it's creativity. Just toss any pesky "lime kiln" emails that would only detract from the drama. Nice jacket Princess Jenn, nice work Kathleen.
