Dominique chicken (Gallus gallus dominique)
PHOTOGRAPH INFO This photograph was taken on Monday at a nearby farm. There are a lot of chicken breeds, as I've come to understand. I don't know what the actual count is but it must exceed 50. The Dominique is America's oldest breed of chicken. It was the most popular variety in the early 1800s, but as new breeds became popular it fell out of favor to the point of near-extinction. (Domestic livestock can become extinct, too.) In the 1970s only three breeders were left. The Dominique has since seen a resurgance but most flocks are less than five years old. The Dominique is prized for its excellent egg and meat production, its superb foraging skills, its ability to withstand inclement weather, and its instinctive skill at hatching and rearing its young. Visit the Dominique Club of America for more information about this wonderful old breed. :) Post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D ______________ NOTE: A Walk Through Durham Township has been nominated in the 2006 Weblog Awards for "Best Photo Blog." Check out the other nominated blogs -- great stuff there, especially from my friends Joe, Sam, David and Travis. Check out the puppies, too. :) Vote here if you like: 2006 Weblog Awards. I love it!!! This is such a high energy photo and it really made me smile today first thing this morning. Looks like he's Struttin' his stuff for you. This is beautifully composed. Posted by Laurie on December 14, 2006 5:39 AMThat is one mighty fine bird! Love it. Posted by LwS on December 14, 2006 6:04 AMlovely chicken running to you ;-) Posted by riesenriel on December 14, 2006 6:18 AMLove the DOF and colours, excellent shot Kathleen. Looks like he was telling you to get off of his turf :) Posted by Craig Wilson on December 14, 2006 6:49 AMThe real eagle :-) Posted by Alick on December 14, 2006 7:08 AMI don't know how it's happening, but the texture on the barn in the bckground is amazing. Just the right bokeh I guess. The analogy between the barn and the pattern on chicken, intentional or not, is perfect. Posted by Kyle on December 14, 2006 7:50 AMGreat DOF on this shot! And the detail in the subject is fantastic. Posted by Alice on December 14, 2006 9:10 AMFantastic detail. I really like this one. Posted by Tanja > DoubleCrossed.ca on December 14, 2006 9:52 AMI like how the chicken fence is out of focus, but still visible. It's a nice detail to the photo. Posted by Robert on December 14, 2006 10:12 AMHaha, it looks like she's showing off for you, - see I can walk a straight line! (love your pics!) Posted by jonas on December 14, 2006 10:19 AMLooks like its dancing with me. Posted by Jeff Ambrose on December 14, 2006 1:59 PMGreat shot and just the right contrast and saturation, as always - I grew up with a bunch of these chickens and this shot reminds me of one named "Herman" who was a particularly mean rooster - until one dark evening when Herman met an equally mean (and hungry)Raccoon! Very enjoyable blog! Posted by Steve Cherry on December 14, 2006 3:51 PMSuch a dainty pose. Just gorgeous. Posted by Ruth on December 14, 2006 4:30 PMGee, another man who thinks he's sooooo scaaary. He just needs a woman to look after him, I suppose. Beautiful colours! And the chosen theme, too! Posted by Ovidiu on December 14, 2006 5:58 PMLove the dominant stance with the outstretched wings. The colors are so warm too. Very nice. Posted by laanba on December 14, 2006 9:00 PMI've enjoyed and admired your work for years, Kathleen. The out-of-focus background is an effective device, but I think perhaps you have over-done it in some of your recent shots. I find it distracting when it occupies so much of the frame. It seems to compete with the chicken. So I look at a thousand of your pictures and don't like two: that's not a bad batting average! Posted by Michael on December 15, 2006 7:54 AMEven chickens dream of joining the circus. Here we find another Dominique practicing for the high wire.........and is it any wonder who might happen along at the right moment? (Circus Con Polo winters in Durham Township?) Gracias, Kathleen
I love how it's flapping its wings. It looks very strong. Posted by Sandra Shirk on December 15, 2006 12:24 PMDidn't I see this same pose in the first Karate Kid movie? Posted by Yosh on December 15, 2006 1:19 PMI like the shot!! And I like too, the information about that kind of chichen...here in Catalonia (Barcelona, Europe) I've never seen that kind :-) Posted by ATZUCAC on December 16, 2006 5:29 AMLooks proud and dominant, good shot! Posted by Wolfgang on December 16, 2006 5:42 AMSuperb toning. I really love how you captured this proud chicken, marching ahead like a matron. It's very lively !
