Falling Leaves, Afternoon Storm

PHOTOGRAPH INFO

This photograph was taken a few days ago during a mid-afternoon wind and rain storm. I had been running errands and pulled the car to the side of the road for a few shots of the leaves blowing. But the wind gusts were so strong I couldn't get the car door open! I had to wait a bit before I could get out.

Not only do I always carry my camera where I go, I carry an assortment of large, heavy-duty plastic baggies and a bunch of rubber bands. I wrap the camera and lens quickly if there's heavy moisture or if it's raining.

Post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D and the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L lens at 24mm, ISO 400, shutter speed 1/1000s and aperture f/10. Basic curves adjustment for contrast & saturation; color balancing for tone.

Thank you for visiting Durham Township!

Great shot! The few leaves falling to the ground really add a lot of interest to an already fantastic photo. Nice job.

A stormy day indeed. Nicely done. I wish things still looked so lush here in Minnesota.

Fantastic shot. I'm so glad you managed to get this shot, it really is a treat!

A few weeks ago I was in Sandy hook trying to shoot the wind-blown spray from the water against the rocks. I was very nearly blown into the bay by the very forceful gusts. It was a little scary, but someone I know took a slip into a river with the same camera I have and they and the camera, which went fully under, were fine. I still don't like the idea of the camera going for a swim, even if it is weather sealed.

Moody, tonal, excellent.

Thank you,

P.S. Any photoshop "fudging" on those leaves in space?

Posted by david Tinnon on October 24, 2006 4:36 PM

Hahahaha, David Tinnon - I don't have enough talent or patience with Photoshop to fudge stuff like that. I only use PS to adjust contrast, saturation and tone. I'm clueless when it comes to moving or adding elements - any graphic arts in general. I'd much rather stick with the photography. :)

Now there's a storm for you. You've done a wonderful job capturing the scene and giving the viewer a peek into your world here. Also, nothing beats the falling leaves. Awesome shot. The composition is fantastic.

Hello K. Sometimes its hard to find words when i look at some photo. Todays post is just like that. i cant find any words. The first thing i think about is -freedom- leafes who flying away and never look back, i feel beauty when i look at that green area. very very nice post today, its simple and its worth considering. have a great wednesday K. :)

O.K. i'm willing to accept that even the leaves on the trees fall for your pictures (without photoshop help!)

Posted by david Tinnon on October 25, 2006 10:46 AM

David Tinnon, you'd be appalled at how many frames I shot in five minutes... there are at least 50 images where the leaves didn't cooperate quite so nicely.

My philosophy for shooting moving objects is that the more you shoot them, the more likely you are to get lucky. :)

very nice landscape! The framing of the tree at the top and the leaves falling works very well! I like the composition of this one.

Very nice image that captures the changing seasons very well. The placement of the falling leaves is excellent and your timing in their capture couldn't have been better. The mood from your toning and adjustments really sets the tone and the elements in the photo carry themselves from there.
