Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Shoffeitt of Dahlonega, Georgia

PHOTOGRAPH INFO

This photograph was taken last Saturday on the outskirts of Dahlonega, Georgia, just before I returned to Durham.

Mr. and Mrs. Shoffeitt own a gas station/general store and are as sweet as Georgia peach pie. I was lucky enough to spend some time with them and get to know them a bit by listening to their life stories --all interesting, fascinating, exciting and hilarious.

The Shoffeitts' store is a great place to experience the flavor of the area as the locals pass through to buy gasoline, cigarettes and beer. The Shoffeitts know everyone by name and there's always time for a story or two.

Post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D and the Canon 85mm f/1.2L lens at 85mm, ISO 400, 1/60s at f/6.3. Basic curves adjustment.

Thank you for visiting Durham Township!

I've always maintained the wisdom of our elders and their sacred place among any people. The things that they have witnessed would stagger the typical Gen-Xer (I am one at 35 yrs.) and often, the grace with which they've handled all of life's arrows is remarkable. So, while they show the wrinkles and the ravages of a hard life, there is a poise and beauty at the same time. A lovely slice of life. Thank you for sharing this wonderful portrait!

I love the way their expressions look so similar. It's almost like they're twins or something. Well done. Can I also quickly say thank you for being one of my sources of inspiration over the past year. I'm celebrating my photoblog's first birthday at the moment (302 pics since October 2005) and just wanted to thank the people who've made an impact on my decisions as a photographer. Cheers.

This is a wonderful photo. I bet they did have wonderful stories to tell, and I bet it was great to be able to sit down with them and listen. Did they mention how long they've been married?

Salt of the earth, as they say. What would we do without them?

Wrinkled smell of ginger biscuits.

Kathleen,

Happy to hear you were here in Georiga last week. My family and I live in Marietta, which is about an hours drive from Dahlonega and 35 minutes north of Atlanta. The Gold Rush festival is going to be in Dahlonega this weekend and we are driving up. I can't wait, I love the mountains! Btw, did you get a chance to see any of the Chestatee River while you were there? My husband lived in a cabin on the river about a year before we were married. Every day was beautiful up there. Glad you got to see a little bit of Georgia. Great pictures. My 2 year old daughter and I check your site out every morning.
