Manfred's Black Turkey

PHOTOGRAPH INFO

This photograph was taken today at our neighbor Manfred's farm. This turkey is a very friendly and curious bird, but stubborn. I've been trying for weeks to get a shot with his feathers open but he won't cooperate. One of these days...

Post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D and the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L lens at 50mm, ISO 250, shutter speed 1/400s and aperture f/2.8. Curves adjustments for contrast/saturation; color balancing for tone.

Thank you for visiting Durham Township!

Beautiful, even without his plumage open. They are very impressive when they are strutting their stuff.

We have or at least had a couple of flocks of wild turkeys that roamed the streets of out very suburban town. I had 6 of them in my back yard one time.

The problem with these turkeys was they were not friendly at all. While they never bothered me, there was a time when I would encounter them daily on my run, they were aggressive to some. A little girl was "attacked" in her front yard and postal worker was attacked to the point where he clocked it with his mail bag and killed the bird. He'd had several unpleasant encounters with them on his route over the months preceding this incident. It even had been on the national news. The postal worker was cleared of any wrongdoings it was determined that it was self defense.

I haven't seen the turkeys in a very long time, but I have noticed a significant increase in fox around here and it makes me wonder if the fox had some nice turkey dinners. I do not know about what fox will hunt or eat and turkeys are huge, but they are also slow and not too bright.

What a handsome--and a little coy--dude! Love the kuh (bovine)behind him.
Looking forward to the full blown plumage shot sure to follow soon...

I love the detail in this shot, and the depth is perfect, but what really makes it for me is the red. The single concentrated area of red contrasts the rest of the image very strongly, and I am digging it. Also, it seems very sureal, but maybe that's just how I'm feeling today.

Beautiful shot. There are turkeys all over the place in the area where my girlfriend lives, they are very funny animals, I love the sounds they make. You've captured great detail here.

The eye. He's looking directly at me. He knows I love turkey and stuffing. Tell him to stop staring. I'm leaving.
