Portrait of Miki

PHOTOGRAPH INFO

This photograph was taken last Thursday afternoon in Niagara Falls, Canada, where we went on vacation last week. This is my friend Miki, creator of the ever-evolving osenoa.com and newest partner at crankphoto.com (where Miki assures me I shall NOT be spared from very honest :) critique).

Miki the Renaissance Man has designed/coded a number of photoblogs out there and he's going to help re-design and update this site over the next few months.

Miki's out-of-focus arm (due to f/1.2) reads "Crede Quod Habes, et Habes" which is Latin for "Believe you have it, and you have it". Superb!

Incidentally, if you're thinking of taking a trip to breathtaking Niagara Falls, Canada, or the truly fabulous Niagara-on-the-Lake, do it! We had such a wonderful time: perfect weather, minimal lines, traffic and crowds, and the folks in Canada are great. Highly recommended!

Post-processing: Shot with the Canon 85mm f/1.2L lens at 85mm, ISO 1600, shutter speed 1/160s and aperture f/1.2. Converted the RAW file using the gradient map, basic curves adjustment, slight color balancing for tone.

Thank you for visiting Durham Township!

Whilst I can appreciate this is technical a very good portrait I don't find it interesting enough. Miki looks like your average bloke, and that's where the problem lies. All the best portraits I've seen have a subject that has bags of character or I feel like I'm looking straight into their soul. This has neither for me.

Ahhh, one of the faces behind Crank...I hope he likes the portrait.

Isn't that lens fun! The DOF is razor thin.

Lovely portrait, the slight blur works for me.

Jon: I may not have bags of character but at least my mom thinks i'm cool.

I think the focal part of the image is a bit soft, but it might just be my eyes/monitor. I love the tattoo.

wow, you're really getting desperate with a model like that!

I agree with Miklos' mom... He's pretty cool (and a badass). I like it, Kathleen, especially with the great bokeh. Well done.

Miklos: Sorry if I caused offense, I was just giving my opinion. Isn't that what blogs are for?

Jon, no no.. No offense taken. My mom really does think that I'm cool. She makes me a chocolate milk every morning and pats me on the head and tells me I'm special. And last night I went out and bought 3 bags of characters.. A-Z mostly. Actually they came in a box. I mixed them in a bowl with some milk this morning and had it all for breakfast! Gotta start somewhere, ya know? Can't just have BAGS of character right off the bat...

well, it's a powerfull shot anyway! Because: "What does that tatoo say?" This is what this makes different... The composition/cropping just right, the B&W makes it very strong and gives this guy (even more) character, the sharpness (eye) and fuzziness (the rest basicly) is brilliant and I like the contrast as well.

Miklos, no, no...you must be mistaken, the character was in the milk, not in the box/bag. You can't buy that kind of character, even if you or anyone else tried. I have to agree with jon, definitely in need of more character. But keep eating that power breakfast and you never know....

Miklos, I read it the wrong way, sorry mate :/

Anyway, don't worry about the character too much. Just tell Kathleen not point her camera at you too often, lol :P
