Only Josh Can Prevent Wildfires (or, How to Tempt a Graffti Artist)

PHOTOGRAPH INFO

This photograph was taken today when I was out running errands. This is the only billboard in the immediate area; it's actually in Nockamixon Township, a mile or two outside of Durham.

The graffiti must've shown up on the billboard in the last couple of days. Until that point I thought the ad was interesting and thought-provoking -- now I know just how thought-provoking it was! I laughed out loud when I saw this little scene and made a U-turn to snap the photo.

Maybe the original ad should win an advertising industry award for temptation.

Post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D and the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L lens at 48mm, ISO 125, shutter speed 1/320s and aperture f/8. Curves adjustment for contrast and saturation, color balancing for tone.

Thank you for visiting Durham Township!

This is just fantastic... I'm anti-vandalism and pro-humor, so this is making me feel SO conflicted. (I think I'm in favor.)

Hahahaha! I love it!

So funny - Will make sure I drive by and check it out. Guess it was just too tempting. Any idea who Josh is? Hope the show is a big success.

Hilarious! I'm glad you went back to shoot it.

This is very amusing. I can definitely see how someone could be tempted by this sign.

Thanks for the morning laugh! Nice find...were there enough trees around to get a better setting?

Posted by Crank on July 19, 2006 9:46 AM

Posted by Jonny on July 19, 2006 9:49 AM

I Love most of photography work, but this is not it !!

Posted by Viral on July 19, 2006 9:51 AM

I found it funny for sure.. Jonny, Viral.. maybe a few more English classes and you'll catch on..

Posted by anonybus on July 19, 2006 2:30 PM

Wow, anonybus beat me to it.

I actually snickered out loud when I first saw this shot. It's something that my brother would do for sure.

Posted by miklos on July 19, 2006 2:36 PM

anonybus, Listen buddy- Being honest about the picture that i do not like has nothing to do with english.

Oh wait...you would know nothing about it because you are too busy Sucking up.

Posted by Jonny on July 19, 2006 3:00 PM

Yes that's me, her majesty Miss Suck-Up here.. Hey, i've got an idea for you Jonny.. Stop trolling (I will after I write this comment, I promise), go pick up a book and educate yourself :) Or if you have a short attention span (which I assume you do), you can start by reading this: http://www.smokeybear.com/resources/Teacher_Guide.pdf

Thanks Jonny!

Anyway, sorry for the inconvenience Kathleen.. I know I didn't make a nice first impression, having not commented here before.. Just so you know, I love your work! ---- I should take that back though! I wouldn't want to offend any members of your audience...

Take care,

Tanja (aka: anonybus)

This is funny! If the advertising agency knows about this they must be really happy. The message is probably clearer because of this graffiti.

If the client knows about this they're probably enraged.

ha! Josh does it all !

How cute!

What a great find. It really tickled my funny bone. Excellent image.

Ok, first time poster, and I hope to avoid the flame war, trolling, etc.

I am curious as to the veracity of this photo, as hilarious as it may be. The ad just doesn't seem consistent or clean enough to be a billboard ad. To keep this post short, I'll only post my observations as to why if others ask me to

Posted by Onyx on July 25, 2006 12:11 AM

Wow, uhm, didn't expect to end the argument this way...

I'm studying Graphic Design, and this ad looked to me to be photoshopped, with it's bad blurry text, different sizes/fonts, and terribly aligned background. Turns out the forestry hired a monkey to do it. For proof, hit

Hopefully that's the right link.

Posted by Onyx on July 25, 2006 12:22 AM

Onyx: I can see why you'd think that about the sign. I thought the same thing while I was shooting it. It looks like a huge, bad, Xerox'd copy of an office memo!

As far as Photoshopping it, I wouldn't have the time or the inclination or the talent. Hahahaha. I can't do much beyond basic photographic adjustments in terms of contrast, saturation, etc. Graphic arts are way beyond my scope of expertise.

Plus a scene like this is not something I'd have the talent to dream up, either! I'm just the dummy with the camera.

The billboard is real- the graffiti is real as well! The ad campaign is throughout this area of Bucks County and Kathleen captured the image as it is- come see it, Route 611, near Route 32 on the North bound side, in Kintnersville/ Nockamixon Township.

I haven't read through all the comments, but my first reaction was to your use of the word "artist" after graffiti in the title (I always find it interesting how others view the world). The photograph is a wonderful display of what not to do. Great work.

brilliant image Kathleen, your work consistantly inspires...
