Jakey Calculating
PHOTOGRAPH INFO This photograph was taken the same afternoon as the next-to-last entry, when Jakey was planting the last of the corn for the season. In this shot, he'd just finished planting the aforementioned field (which is why he was covered in dust) and was standing in the bed of a dump truck mentally calculating how much seed corn he needed to finish up the final field. In the truck you see a huge aqua-colored tank of liquid fertilizer (called Corn Starter) and the remaining seed corn. He was completely oblivious to me standing there taking his photo, which is pretty funny because it looks so posed. Post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D YOU'RE INVITED! Come see about 20 printed and framed images from A Walk Through Durham Township at Gallery 14 in Hopewell, New Jersey, beginning Friday, July 14th through Sunday, August 27th. My exhibit is called The Value of the Land and it's showing alongside Gallery 14 member Jim Hilgendorf's exhibit entitled Trucks and Truckers. We're in for a slice of Americana! :) There's a wine & cheese opening reception on Friday, July 14th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m and a "Meet the Photographers" event on Sunday, July 16th from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. I'll be at both -- hope you can stop by! I love this. He looks heroic and epic! Posted by Grosse Pointer on July 9, 2006 1:18 PMThis is a fantastic photo. It really captures the essence of a hardworking farmer. Posted by Laurie on July 9, 2006 2:02 PMThat sky is excellent! Great detail in this shot, very nice. Posted by Craig Wilson on July 9, 2006 3:30 PMHe looks iconic, like something out of a Soviet propaganda poster. Don't worry; I mean that as a compliment. Some of those posters were great art. Terrific shot. Posted by MarkDM on July 9, 2006 7:56 PMI agree with all the previous comments. Very powerful image. Definitely something to be proud of. Posted by Jonathan on July 9, 2006 9:06 PMSmashing photo. What a powerful camera/lens/eye combination you have! Posted by geckonia on July 9, 2006 10:04 PMBeautiful, beautiful array of colours! Posted by PlasticTV on July 10, 2006 3:36 AMI don't think this looks posed at all. It looks completely natural to me. Great shot Kathleen. Posted by Jon on July 10, 2006 7:16 AMNice perspective, it gives that larger than life feel. The bright yellow opposite the blue sky are a wonderful combination. Posted by Steve W on July 10, 2006 7:42 AMAt first I thought those were sacks of concrete, then I realized they were seed. Shows how much of a city boy I've become. This shot reminds me of Lewis Hine's "Powerhouse Mechanic" from 1920. The photo can be seen on the upper left of the linked page, click for a larger version. Posted by matt on July 10, 2006 9:47 AMBeautiful shot Kathleen. I love the angle of the shot that makes him look like Grosse Pointer said 'epic'. Good capture. I love when "natural moments" becomes so artistic. Posted by Walter on July 11, 2006 3:19 AMYou are in to clouds lately! Very nice. Grosse Pointer said: "I love this. He looks heroic and epic!" I could not say this better. It also makes me think of those old communistic propaganda posters. Posted by javga on July 11, 2006 3:45 AMGreat shot. The glorifying of the young laborer. I like it! Posted by Kristarella on July 17, 2006 1:43 AMI like the point of view very much in this shot...great sky as well. Phil Posted by [t e r r o r k i t t e n] on July 28, 2006 10:13 AMSpeak!
