Jenn at the Thaler Farm
PHOTOGRAPH INFORMATION Happy SPRING to those in the northern hemisphere... sure doesn't feel like it yet around here, though! Post-processing: Shot with the Canon EOS 5D Thanks, everyone! --Kathleen Comments
This is a nice shot. I like the expansiveness of the sky, and the postprocessing is done really well. I've had some trouble recently working on the colors of my skies -- they're always so picky. What tool do you use to darken them like that? I have to say that, though this is nice, I don't think its as strong as many of your other ones. The scenery is beautiful, but I feel like the subject is too small, which throws off the composition a bit. Posted by Justin on March 21, 2006 1:53 AMWell done. I just love your skies. The sky is always blue, and there are always nice clouds. Your pictures makes me happy in a way :) Posted by thukai on March 21, 2006 2:17 AMOhhh, this is one of your best shots....so nice and beautiful :) Posted by bruno on March 21, 2006 3:09 AMVery nice composition and beatiful dramatic sky. Like the deep blue! Posted by roberman on March 21, 2006 5:01 AMWow, this blew me away. Love the striking colours! Posted by Donncha O Caoimh on March 21, 2006 5:19 AMKathleen, Glad to see the sky and clouds are back! I'm really big on that and have been missing them in your recent shots. Regards, Is the tractor really tilted or is that the wide angle effect? Posted by Ted on March 21, 2006 6:24 AMha! i like it! Posted by Crash on March 21, 2006 6:47 AMVery nice, it makes me sad that its spring and yet its more of a winter than winter was (in the UK anyway). I long for clouds and sky, all I see is sky's of clouds. Lovely colours as always and a great composition... Posted by JD on March 21, 2006 7:12 AMJustin: Try using the selective color tool - add some black to your blues and cyans and see what happens. Also try a circular polarizing filter on the camera. Works great! Ted: The tractor is on a slight hill so it's leaning to the right. Posted by Kathleen on March 21, 2006 7:28 AMWhat immediately struck me about this picture was the way Jenn uses the slanting tractor, to lean on. I’m drawn to this arrangement, and everything else plays second fiddle. Posted by garyx on March 21, 2006 7:43 AMSuch a friendly and clear sky. Like the overall coloring too. Great! Posted by John on March 21, 2006 7:46 AMStrong "big sky" feeling. I'll have to rty using the selective color. She looks as if she's posing for a snapshot for another photographer out of the left hand frame, with your photo capturing the moment and the huge environment behind her that the snapshot will miss. Posted by Robert on March 21, 2006 7:51 AMThis is a great shot. I love the her leaning and the tractor play with your eyes. Posted by Richard on March 21, 2006 11:20 AMBeautiful as usual! Posted by Ashish Sidapara on March 21, 2006 11:22 AMGreat photo Kathleen. I love the colors, and the leaning tractor. Posted by James the marathoner on March 21, 2006 12:31 PMquite beautiful Posted by Gary on March 21, 2006 1:37 PMI hope this isn't a double post, but my comp went funny while I was tyoping and the window was disappeared. So at the risk of repeating myself... This is a lovely shot, once again. The angle is very dramatic. It gives it the feel of limitless space. I think I mentioned it before, but so many of your photos bring back memories of a children's book my mom used to read to me; "The Big World and the Little House". I get that warm fuzzy feeling when I think back to that time in my youth. I don't remember the whole story all that well, it's more of a feeling I get when I think about the book. It may sound silly, but thank you. Posted by Laurie on March 21, 2006 4:19 PMNice, wonderful colors as usual, but is it just me or does everything look slanty? Was this intentional? Pretty cool looking regardless... I personally liked the cloud puffs ;) i could also see myself wandering around the whole scenery :) Posted by PARCPHOTOGRAPHY on March 21, 2006 8:08 PMMassive and wonderful. Posted by moeview on March 22, 2006 8:05 AMOn and on it goes..one gorgeous photograph after another. What I want to know is, how much time you spent waiting for the cloud composition to work out so well. I shoot landscape primarily for painting references and will shoot cloud patterns for hours because they are continously in motion and create designs and compositions that I could not dream up. (And dittos to all the above accolades from another frequent visitor to AWTDT, my favorite photoblog.) Posted by david Tinnon on March 22, 2006 12:09 PMI like this image for I find it comical. My, Jenn really is strong, she is almost pushing that tractor over. Great sky, just those few whispy clouds. Lovely. Posted by tobias on March 22, 2006 7:52 PMSolaria: The tractor is on a small hill so it's slanting in that direction, and Jenn is leaning on the tractor, so she's slanting, too. :) The horizon is straight. Motina: Jenn still has the stilletos. Her versatility as a model is growing. :) david Tinnon: I don't spend any time waiting on clouds... I just shoot when I shoot. When I notice interesting clouds, I make a point having the camera nearby at all times, though. You never know what might turn up. tobias: Glad you saw the humour. :) Posted by Kathleen on March 23, 2006 1:48 PMClouds like these are simply wonderful. Great looking image. Posted by Paxton Prints on March 24, 2006 1:36 AMLove the framing and the feeling of vastness, great sky. Posted by miles on March 25, 2006 11:35 AMKathleen, I've been lurking here for months, silently enjoying your terrific photography. Visiting your site is one of the highlights of my day! I'm curious on a technical point: when you say you do "color balancing for tone," what PS tool/menu are you using? (Trying to slowly learn something from your wonderful post-processing...) Cheers, Speak!
